How to Export a Squarespace Site as HTML

Updated October 2026

Squarespace does not offer an HTML export. The only built in export is a WordPress format XML file, and it leaves most of your site behind. This guide covers the three ways people actually get a Squarespace site out, what each one keeps, and what breaks no matter which you choose.

What Squarespace's own export contains

In Settings → Advanced → Import / Export, Squarespace produces an XML file meant for WordPress. It includes the text of your pages and blog posts and links to your images. It does not include your template, colors, fonts, layouts, galleries, forms, product pages or the images themselves. If you open the file, it is a long list of text, not a website.

Option 1: the WordPress XML

Good if you are moving to WordPress and plan to redesign anyway. You import the XML into WordPress, upload the images again, and rebuild the layout with a theme. Expect a weekend of work for a small site, and a different look at the end.

Option 2: a crawler (HTTrack, SiteSucker, wget)

Crawlers download the pages your browser would see. They are free and work on any site. The catch is Squarespace's JavaScript: images load lazily, galleries and menus are built by scripts that stop working off Squarespace, and the saved pages keep tracking scripts and references back to Squarespace. The result opens, but it often looks broken on phones and needs hand editing.

Option 3: a measured static export

This is what StaticExit does. The site is rendered in a real browser, the Squarespace scripts are removed, images are downloaded at full size and resized for the web, fonts are copied into the site where the license allows, and small replacements are added for the parts that needed scripts: mobile menu, galleries, accordions, forms and maps. Then every page is compared with the live site at five screen widths, and the numbers come with the delivery.

What breaks no matter what

Anything that runs on Squarespace servers stops when you leave: store checkout, member areas, appointment scheduling, blog comments and site search. The pages themselves can still be exported; the functions behind them cannot. Adobe Fonts also stop serving when a site leaves Squarespace, so plan a substitute font.

Before you cancel

  1. Export while the site is still online. Expired sites cannot be crawled.
  2. Keep your domain: move it to a registrar you control before the subscription ends.
  3. Write down page URLs. Keeping the same paths keeps your Google rankings.
Free check: enter your address on the StaticExit home page to see your page count, what will carry over, and previews of the export. The export itself is $79 once; hosting is optional at $9 a month.

FAQ

Does Squarespace have an HTML export? No. The only export is a WordPress format XML with text content.

Can I host the exported site anywhere? Yes. Static files run on Netlify, Cloudflare Pages, GitHub Pages, Amazon S3 or any server.

Will my site look the same? With a measured export, within a few pixels at every screen width, and you get the measurement table.
