Squarespace includes Adobe Fonts (the service formerly called Typekit) in every plan. That is why so many Squarespace sites use Proxima Nova, Futura PT or Freight. The license is Squarespace's, not yours, so the fonts stop loading the moment the site is served from anywhere else. The page falls back to whatever the browser has, usually Arial or Times, and the design looks wrong.
On the live site, open the browser's developer tools and look for a stylesheet from use.typekit.net. The family names inside it (for example proxima-nova) are the ones you need to replace. Google Fonts and fonts you uploaded yourself are not affected.
| Adobe font | Open source match |
|---|---|
| Proxima Nova | Montserrat |
| Futura PT | Jost |
| Brandon Grotesque | Josefin Sans |
| Freight Text | Lora |
| Freight Display | Playfair Display |
| Adobe Garamond | EB Garamond |
| Mrs Eaves | Cormorant Garamond |
| Sofia Pro | Nunito |
| Museo Sans | Nunito Sans |
| Neue Haas Grotesk, Acumin | Inter |
| Baskerville URW | Libre Baskerville |
| DIN 2014 | Barlow |
The trick that keeps your stylesheet untouched: declare the replacement font under the Adobe family name. The CSS keeps asking for proxima-nova and gets Montserrat.
@font-face { font-family: "proxima-nova"; font-weight: 400; src: url("/fonts/montserrat-400.woff2") format("woff2"); }
@font-face { font-family: "proxima-nova"; font-weight: 700; src: url("/fonts/montserrat-700.woff2") format("woff2"); }
Download the woff2 files from Google Fonts once, put them next to your site, and the pages load them from your own host with no third party request.
Downloading the font files from the Typekit stylesheet and hosting them yourself breaks the Adobe license. Use the open source matches above or buy a web license for the original font.
